Malaysian authorities today denied renewal of publishing license for a popular Tamil daily, Makkal Osai, which has been providing wide coverage for the opposition party People Alliance (Pakatan Rakyat) and its advisor Anwar Ibrahim. According to sources, no reason was given for the refusal. The daily’s license expired on 15th. October, last year but was allowed to continue publishing with an understanding expecting it toe the line. This is not the first time for Makkal Osai, owned by S. Subramaniam, former Malaysian Indian Congress deputy President, getting into trouble. The daily has previously been suspended and often critical of MIC President Samy Vellu.
