Malaysian senior cabinet minister Samy Vellu’s attempt to meet Tamil Nadu chief Minister Karunanithi since his visit to Chennai on Dec 29th apparently failed, according to local Tamil dailies.

“I have invited Karunanithi to Malaysia three times and honored him. His refusal to speak to me is regrettable”, Makkal Osai reported.

Malaysia Nanban
also highlighted on the front page the same news. The caption reads, “Am I a foreigner? Samy Vellu question Kalainyar (Karunannithi)”.  Previously, Samy Vellu enjoyed huge respect from Tamil Nadu politicians every time he visits there. So far there is no news of him meeting any prominent politicians from neither ruling nor opposition party leaders. Seems Hindraf leader Vethammoorthi’s campaign worked.

Malaysia Nanban
provided the full text of Samy’s speech and the subsequent question and answer session held in Chennai. Some excerpts:

Qs: We read in newspapers that ten thousand people participated in the Hindraf rally. Do you agree Hindraf has a huge following?

Samy: I don’t think so. In my country, that’s not a big crowd. One million will turn up if we organize a meeting.

Samy Velu is organizing a rally on 20/01/08 to show support to PM Badawi where 15,000 people are expected to turn up, according to Samy owned Tamil Nesan. I’m sure MIC will pay for transport and food as usual unlike the 30,000 Hindraf supporters who came on their own expense. Samy where is your one million? What a shameful lie.
Samy: For 100 years Indians particularly Tamils were left by the British government with great suffering. Hindraf supporters wanted to submit a memorandum to British High Commission on a Sunday knowing very well that it’s a holiday. You cannot have a rally without a police permit in my country and yet they proceeded.

The British High Commission was much happier to receive on Sunday and specially arranged an officer to receive the memorandum. Most Indian workers are only free on Sunday especially plantation workers who will lose their day wages on other days.

Qs: Using water canon on Hindraf rally is a human rights violation. What do you say?

Samy: Human rights is different from government laws. No government will tolerate people breaking the law and order. They smashed Batu Caves main gate, entered temple premises illegally and hit polis with stones. Those who break laws will be punished. What was done in my country? Beat using batons?  Shooting? Used stones to hit? We only used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowd. At the same time, in other countries people are beaten. Watch Sun TV, you will know.

Government controlled Malaysian TV channels will show the few injured policeman, only, not the hundreds of injured peaceful protesters. Samy watch Al Jazeera, you will know.

Qs: In your country only one person got MBBS medical seat, according Hindraf. What is your answer?

Samy: Out of all the lies, this was their first price lie. 62 students got seats in all the medical colleges in the country and. another 52 students to study in overseas.

No statistics available to comment on this.

One thing is certain; Samy Vellu has lost his respect in Tamil Nadu.
