KUALA LUMPUR: MIC president Datuk G. Palanivel has declined his reelection as a trustee in the MIC-owned Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED), preferring to concentrate on the party and the Indian community affairs. Palanivel, who took over the party presidency last December, had sent a letter indicating that he did not want to be reelected as a trustee to the MIED.

At the MIED annual general meeting held Monday, Palanivel and veteran MIC politician Tan Sri K S Nijhar had declined the reelection while eight others, including former president and MIED chairman Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, were re-elected as the trustees.

The others were MIC deputy president Datuk Dr S Subramania, vice president Datuk M Saravanan, Perak MIC chairman Datuk S Veerasingam, veteran politician Tan Sri G Vadiveloo, Negri Sembilan MIC chairman Datuk T Rajagopalu, Johor MIC chairman Datuk K S Balakrishnan and MIC education bureau chairman Tan Sri M Marimuthu.

In a statement, Palanivel said that he had declined as he had too many responsibilities to handle both as party president and Minister.

“The MIED board meetings are very time consuming. My job is to provide leadership to the party and the community. I think I will concentrate on this,” he said.

Palani did not attend the board meeting which was held in the morning as well as the AGM in the afternoon.

This is the first time that two leaders had declined reelection as trustees since the MIED was founded by Samy Vellu in the 1980s.

Nijhar, when contacted, said he had already indicated his decision not to seek reelection as a trustee as he would take up appointment as chairman in a public private sector initiative soon.

“I thank the chairman, the other trustees and the members for the support extended to me for the past 28 years,” he said, adding that he was willing to assist MIED on an ad hoc basis.

MIED is worth nearly RM1bil. It also administers MIC's Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology in Kedah.
