Samy Vellu
The Star, By FLORENCE A.SAMY , florenceasamy@thestar.com.my
PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu is set to be appointed as the government’s special envoy for infrastructure with ministerial status as part of a deal which will see him quit as MIC president. The former Works Minister’s appointment is expected to take effect on Dec 1. It was previously reported that he would hand over the party reins to his deputy Datuk G. Palanivel in January.

The veteran politician would also enjoy ministerial status just like former Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaludin Jarjis who was given ministerial status when he was appointed ambassador to the United States last year. Speculation is also rife that the 74-year-old will be made a ‘Tun’ sometime next year. Samy Vellu has declined to comment about the appointment and on Thursday shot down rumours that he would be leaving early. He is expected to visit India and its neighbouring countries in his new capacity to help secure infrastructure projects on behalf of the Malaysian government as well as foster bilateral ties. This is in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak plan to strengthen ties and increase investments with India. According to party insiders, the appointment was to ensure that Samy Vellu leaves with a happy heart. Samy Vellu’s appointment as envoy could come before the official handover to Palanivel provided he sends in a post-dated resignation letter to quit as MIC president, said a party insider. He is expected to make an announcement soon after the Barisan Nasional convention on Nov 28. “His handover to Datuk Palanivel may not take weeks. He can announce it today and hand over tomorrow,” a source said. One party veteran said he was happy for Samy Vellu, calling the appointment an “open secret”. “Personally, it is good for him. But our focus should be on building people’s confidence and preparing the party for the next general election,” he said.
