KUALA LUMPUR: A couple fed rat poison to their two-year-old son before jumping to their deaths off the 29th floor of their luxury condominium in Brickfields, here.

The couple, aged 34 and 29, whose sprawled bodies were discovered by a security guard on the ground floor of the condominium around 7.30am Thursday, were both Indian nationals.

The body of the child was found in the master bedroom of the family's 14th floor residence. A bottle of panadol, some rat poison and a bloodied knife were found near him.

Police believe the boy's father, a financial consultant in a private firm, had tried to commit suicide by using the knife to slit his wrist but deicided to jump instead.

The family was reported to be in the country for less than two months.

City CID chief SAC II Datuk Ku Chin Wah, who confirmed the incident, said initial investigations placed the time of death between midnight and 4am Thursday.

Police had yet to ascertain the reason for their suicide, he added.

Tragic death of Mumbai family in Brickfields baffles cops

Manish Tragedy

KUALA LUMPUR: It seemed like they had it all going for them — new country, new home and a relatively new family. Happy chapters in their lives beckoned. What could have caused this murder-suicide at a posh  condominium in Brickfields yesterday?

Just a month ago, Manish Dinesh Wadhwani, 34, and his wife Niveditaa Manish Wadhwani, 29, must have thought they were on the verge of living a dream.

Little did anyone expect the couple would end up killing their two-year-old son Yoghansh Manish Wadhwani with rat poison before taking their own lives by plummeting from 29 storeys high.

According to neighbours, the couple, more often than not, had a smile for everyone.

"The three of them looked like a lovely bunch and had an aura of love and friendliness about them. Between my family and theirs, it was just the occasional 'hi and bye' because they were new to the building," said one of the residents on the same floor as the deceased family.

The victims' next door neighbour refuted suggestions of any kind of resentment between the husband and wife.

"Not once since they moved in have I heard any ruckus coming from their place.

"This is a peaceful neighbourhood. If they had only granted themselves enough time, I'm sure they would have fitted in quite nicely," said the neighbour, who preferred to remain anonymous.

Like everyone else, even the police are perplexed as to why they resorted to such drastic measures.

Marriage problems looked the least of the couple's concerns .

Financial constraints? Maybe. After all, they were living in an apartment which is valued at about RM500,000. New country, new job, new environment and surroundings — and maybe new and growing problems as well.

Police have classified the case as sudden death. But the big "W" question pops up again — why? Police have not ruled out foul play. Maybe these people succumbed to pressure from the notorious Ah Long? That appears to be the most logical explanation for now.

A high-ranking officer said: "People are still wondering what happened and so are we. If we let this go, there will be too many questions left unanswered."

All three bodies have been sent for post-mortem at the University Malaya Medical Centre. No one has come forward to claim the bodies, yet
