PPP: Who is the PPP president?

2009/07/31 WHO IS IN CHARGE? Kayveas: That is not a fair question. The Registrar of Societies recognised only one person. The prime minister opened our annual general meeting on June 3. (Senator) T. Murugiah has been expelled from our party.

He operates from the Prime Minister's Department. He is abusing his position. He used the department to organise functions but when you go there, it turns out to be a PPP function. He thinks this is like plucking flowers when the gardener is not around. But we know. Murugiah: I am the rightful president. According to party rules, the president is supposed to call for an AGM once a year with a grace period of six months. If no meeting is held within the 18 months, an extraordinary general meeting can be called and this is what members did two months ago when they appointed me president and sacked Kayveas. WHICH 'PRESIDENT' IS GIVING INSTRUCTIONS? Kayveas: He needs to put up a show and engage in gimmicks. Nobody is registering branches "set up" by him. To form a branch he needs the president, deputy or secretary-general to endorse them. He calls for new uniforms for members as he can't get them from the headquarters. He has this need to appear in front of a camera. He needs a press conference to stay relevant and in the news. Murugiah: He has stopped giving instructions. He is keeping quiet now. I organise various programmes every weekend. There are seminars for entrepreneurs, and 18,000 people have benefited from them so far. I bring in speakers under the PM's Department. WHO DOES THE ROS FAVOUR? Kayveas: They have raised the issues that he (Murugiah) highlighted and we have addressed them. The ROS can't change the leadership of the party. They asked us questions and we have clarified with them besides submitting do*****ents. Murugiah is living in a dream world. Murugiah: It is in my favour. My chances are bright because I was elected by various branch chairmen. I had no intention to head the party. There is a Chinese saying -- the lion is forced to jump -- I am the lion and I was forced to jump. I had intended to go for a vice-president's post. But I was sacked without proper procedure being adhered to. Members who have joined me do not want a dictator. We should be like a family.THE EFFECT OF THE SPLIT ON MEMBERS Kayveas: Members know what our party stands for. Those showing up at Murugiah's functions are opportunists gravitating towards him for goodies. I admit there may be a few members (who have joined Murugiah) but the majority are still with me. Murugiah: I have 42,000 members now from Johor, Perak, Penang and Selangor. A total of 6,500 members have joined me in the Federal Territory. I am also going to Negri Sembilan, Malacca, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Sabah and Perlis. I expect 150,000 members by the end of the year. Those with Kayveas are fence-sitters. They are also waiting for a decision from the ROS. No one has joined the opposition. In fact, Pakatan members have joined us with 300 from Ipoh Barat and 150 from Taiping. I am expecting more to join me. NEW POLICIES AS PRESIDENT Kayveas: Our policies continue. We don't need any rebranding as we have have championed every Malaysian cause since 1996. Our slogan is "Towards One Malaysian Race" which is very much like 1Malaysia. Murugiah: I have set up a cooperative for members to do small businesses such as franchising. We are also identifying land through the land office to cultivate oil palm. I have also set up a foundation to fund their children's studies. We will raise money through dinners and appeal to big companies to help us. We are also trying to set up a credit cooperation for members to take business loans. I have also introduced a new uniform for our Youth, Puteri and Wanita wings. POLLS CANDIDATES Kayveas: Of course, the current leadership under me will decide on candidates (for any future general election or by-election). Murugiah: I leave that to the prime minister.
