Muthu Veloo to contest for MIC youth chief post

Contributed by Anonymous on Saturday, July 18 @ 10:56:31 CDT

The Star, Jul 18 2009
KUALA LUMPUR: S.P. Muthu Veloo, nephew of MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu will contest for the Youth chief post in the party Youth and Wanita elections next month.

The 38-year-old lawyer who is MIC Youth national council member said he wants to help bring a new direction for the wing to regain the support of the Indian community. “We have to come to a point where a change is inevitable and the changes have to be made to adapt to the need and aspirations of the community,” he told reporters at his office here Saturday. MIC Youth is now led by a coordinator T. Mohan who was appointed by MIC president Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu after former youth chief S. A. Vigneswaran stepped down last year after surpassing the age limit of 41 years. Nomination for the MIC youth is scheduled for Aug 8 while the election will be held during the wing’s assembly on Aug 16 which Samy Vellu will open. The party general assembly is scheduled to be on Sept 12. Muthu Veloo, who is also the Subang division youth chief said the youth wing has an important role to play as the majority of youths are future voters of the country. “I have travelled around the country to meet the youth delegates over the past few months and had received encouraging responses which gave me the inspiration to contest for the post,” he said. Muthu Veloo said the youths are dedicated and want to work for the community but they are still like uncut diamonds and need to be polished. He said he has informed Samy Vellu of his intention to contest for the post and since he was not stopped by him (Samy Vellu), he would take it as an implied blessing to contest. Muthu Veloo joined the MIC in 1989 and was appointed chairman of the youth development bureau by Vigneswaran in 2005 and was reappointed a year later to the same bureau after being elected to the National Youth Council. He said the contest for the youth chief is a healthy one and that Mohan was his good friend. “I have nothing against him but I feel I would be able to contribute and that is why I am offering myself,” he said. Mohan welcomed the contest, adding that the 541 youth delegates attending the assembly would decide on the new youth chief. “I hope it will be a healthy and friendly fight. I have confidence that the delegates will choose one who is genuinely working for the youths and the community,” he said.
